Saint Benedict was a monk in the late 5th and early the centuries and was the founder of the Benedictine Order and wrote the Rule of Saint Benedict which was a set of rules for his monasteries to follow. The Benedictine Order is the oldest order in the Catholic Church and his direction provided direction and an ordered, stable form of life needed for the centuries following the collapse of the Roman Empire. His rule influenced most religious orders and communities founded during the Middle Ages and pushed many to become centers of learning and culture laying the foundation for the later flourishing of Europe.

The mug is engraved on the front and reverse with the evolved Medal of SAint Benedict which is rich in meaning and symbolism. The front letters C S S M L - N D S M D are initials translating into the phrase 'May the holy cross be my light! May the dragon never be my overlord!’, C S P B means 'The Cross of [our] Holy Father Benedict’ and V R S N S M V - S M Q L I V B 'Begone Satan! Never tempt me with your vanities! What you offer me is evil. Drink the poison yourself!’ the ‘PAX’ at the top means ‘peace.’ On the back of the medal is Saint Benedict holding a cross in his right hand, the Christian symbol of salvation, and in the left his Rule for Monasteries.
