On November 27, 1830, Saint Catherine Lebouré experienced an apparition of the Blessed Mother at her convent on rue du Bac in Paris, France. She saw Mary standing on a globe with dazzling rays of light streaming from her outstretched hands surrounded by the words: "O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee."
The Medal shows Mary standing on the globe representing earth while her foot is crushing the head of the serpent symbolizing her conquering Satan by giving birth to the Savior. The rays of light symbolize the graces which Mary helps give to those who ask.
The vision was the face of the medal and the reverse was another vision which had twelve stars, symbolizing the twelve apostles, encircling a large "M" which a cross arose. Beneath the letter were the images of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
The Mug of the Immaculate Conception has the design of the Miraculous Medal engraved on the front and reverse.
